Our candlelit vigils in solidarity with Afghan women have gone international! Women in the country of Georgia will be holding simultaneous candlelit vigils around the country to highlight the issues affecting women in conflict areas and to stand in solidarity with women's rights activists in Afghanistan.
Women from the Cultural – Humanitarian Fund “Sukhumi”, located in Kutaisi, Georgia, are organising candlelit vigils in solidarity with Afghan women 31st of October from 18.00-19.00 in 10 cities in Western Georgia. They are a women's NGO founded by Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) women from Abkhazia who work on women’s issues all over Western Georgia.
Why they are getting involved: "As we are women...effected by...conflict, IDPs, we know how it is to live in conflicted situation, when around you only see violence…. As we work in 10 cities of Western Georgia: Kutaisi, Tskhaltubo, Khoni, Senaki, Foti, Khobi, Zugdidi, Khurcha, Ozurgeti and Batumi, we plan to conduct the vigils in the key visible areas of their communities in the early evening of the 31st of October to support the Afghan women." - Alla Gamakharia, Chairperson, Cultural-Humanitarian Fund "Sukhumi"
25- 30 women will take part in all cities, standing together, holding candles and wearing green scarves.
