Take action for women's rights in Afghanistan

Send a postcard to your MP asking them to take action for women's rights in Afghanistan, the campaign's focus in the coming months. Use our template text or, even better, write your own message (feel free to copy and paste). A handwritten letter to your MP also does wonders.

When the UK and USA entered Afghanistan in 2001, women's rights were prominently featured in the list of reasons to intervene. Ten years later, as the international community discusses transition out of Afghanistan, women and the issues affecting them are being sidelined from discussions.

This December, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague attended a conference in Bonn, along with delegates from 90 countries and organisations, to discuss the future of Afghanistan. This was only the first step in a long process of negotiations which will shape the future of the country.

No women, no peace. is calling for the UK government to ensure that the voices of Afghan women are heard at ongoing peace and transition talks, including the recommendations of the Afghan Women's Network (found at http://bit.ly/nrK0jd). We ask that any agreements explicitly call for women's rights in Afghanistan to be protected not undermined.

I write to ask you to:

    • Raise this issue with the Foreign Secretary and ask him to ensure that Afghan women's voices are heard at ongoing discussions on the future of Afghanistan
    • Join the Associate Parliamentary Group on Women, Peace and Security
    • Commit to championing the issue in parliament

    Yours sincerely,

  • No women, no peace. is calling for:

Leadership  - The government's new Champion on International Violence against Women must be properly resourced and make women, peace and security one of her top priorities. Coordination  - A High-level taskforce of Senior government officials mandated to drive forward this work across relevant departments. Investment -  Within existing budgets clear funds must be allocated for women. Accountability - the government must uphold its commitment to formally report on progress on the National Action Plan in Autumn 2011 and every year thereafter.
